The Simon Kenton Pathfinders is an all-volunteer organization whose mission is to create and help maintain a shared-use trail in Champaign County. We have at present 350 members who participate in this project, by providing financial support, attending community meetings and events, and helping to do the physical work related to maintaining the trail.
Phase 1 between Woodburn Road and State Route 55 was dedicated July 1, 2001. Phase 2, Woodburn Road south to Critter Court in Clark County (Eagle City Road), was dedicated September 27, 2003. Phase 3, State Route 55 north under a tunnel to Community Drive by the YMCA. was dedicated October 17, 2004. Part of Phase 3 was the installation of a box culvert under State Route 55, providing a safe separation of bikes and people from the high traveled highway. Phase 3 has two sections on the street. From the old rail bed at Dellinger and East Lawn you travel south on East Lawn Street to Children's Home Road into Melvin Miller Park, just east of Sara Court. The trail continues south and east behind the swimming pool and the tennis court. The Simon Kenton Trail in Champaign County is now 11 miles long. The Simon Kenton Trail connections Champaign County to the existing 90 mile trail to Cincinnati, Ohio.
We look forward to working with you in the future. Our meetings are the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Urbana Station, 644 Miami Street. These meetings are short, interesting and informational. Many of our best ideas have come from brand new members, so please feel welcome to get involved and keep our community healthy.
